根據卡內基高等教育機構分類法（英語：Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education），美國華盛頓哥倫比亞特區共有十九間大專院校[註 1]，其中包括五所研究型大學（英語：Doctoral university）、四所碩士型大學（英語：Masters university），以及十所專業型高等教育機構（英語：special-focus institution）。在這些大專院校中，十六所為私立院校，其中三所為營利性質（英語：For-profit higher education in the United States）；而列於卡內基分類法中的公立院校則只有三所。除了卡內基分類法下列明的院校外，華盛頓特區還有另外三所非營利私立大專院校（分別為約翰霍普金斯大學的保羅·H·尼茲高等國際研究學院（英語：Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies）、NewU大學及聖保祿學院（英語：St. Paul's College, Washington, D.C.）），以及兩所的公立大專院校（即國防大學及美洲防務學院）。

華盛頓特區最古老的大專院校是創立於1789年的喬治城大學[2][3]。該校同時也是美國歷史最悠久的耶穌會及天主教大學（英語：List of Roman Catholic universities and colleges in the United States）[4][5]。喬治·華盛頓大學成立於1821年，是特區學生人數最多的大專院校，截至2023年秋季有約25,568名學生[6][7]。根據美國教育部轄下教育科學研究所（英語：Institute of Education Sciences）的資料，華盛頓神學聯盟（英語：Washington Theological Union）的學生人數最少，僅約80人[7]。

在卡內基分類法中，華盛頓特區共有六所天主教背景的大專院校，分別為：美國天主教大學、喬治城大學、道明會研究院（英語：Dominican House of Studies）、美國天主教大學若望保祿二世宗座婚姻與家庭研究學院（英語：John Paul II Institute）、三一華盛頓大學（英語：Trinity Washington University），以及華盛頓神學聯盟（英語：Washington Theological Union）。此外，高立德大學是一所專為聽障及弱聽人士而設的大專院校，其教學語言為英語與美國手語，並具雙語教學特色[8]。

哥倫比亞特區大學（英語：University of the District of Columbia）是華盛頓特區最大型的公立大學，學生人數約為5,110人，同時亦是區內歷史最悠久的傳統黑人大學[7]，亦是特區唯一獲授予土地撥款的大學[9]。另一所傳統黑人大學是霍華德大學，與哥倫比亞特區大學同為瑟古德·馬歇爾大學基金會（英語：Thurgood Marshall College Fund）的成員，也是一所全國排名頂尖的黑人大學[10][11]。
