近況更新 - 面向編輯者

A quarterly update from the Growth team on our work to improve the new editor experience.

Constructive Activation Experiments

This year, the Growth team is exploring ways to help more new account holders start editing—and do so constructively, meaning their edits are not reverted. Our latest experiments include:

• Gradual rollout of "Add a Link" at English Wikipedia – We are gradually introducing the "Add a Link" structured task to newcomers at English Wikipedia (T386029). This serves as a natural A/B test to measure its impact on activation, retention, and revert rates (T382603). Previous experiments on pilot wikis showed that "Add a Link" increases newcomer participation, particularly by helping them make constructive (non-reverted) edits.
• Testing in-article suggestions for first-time editors – Many new account holders want to contribute but don’t know where to start. To help, we’re piloting a feature that surfaces structured task suggestions directly in an article’s read view for brand-new editors (T385343). These suggestions will appear for logged-in users with no edits, providing a clear, simple way to begin contributing that is surfaced while they read.

Community Updates

Newcomers often struggle to find their place in Wikipedia’s collaborative environment. While experienced editors easily discover events like edit-a-thons and writing campaigns, newcomers often miss out.

• To bridge this gap, we launched the Community Updates module for the Newcomer Homepage. This module is disabled by default, allowing Community Admins to decide how (or if) to use it.
• If your community hosts events, consider setting up a Community Update to engage and welcome newcomers! Learn more on Diff. To configure, visit Special:CommunityConfiguration.

Community Configuration

Community Configuration is now available across all wikis, including non-Wikipedia projects (T383910). Community Configuration allows admins to customize various features like Growth features and Automoderator for their communities, and more recently the Babel extension now allows admins to modify configuration:

• Babel customization – Admins can now configure Babel settings (T374348), including category naming, automatic category creation, and more. See an example on Wikimedia Commons.
• Upcoming configurable features – Projects exploring community configuration options include: Incident Reporting System (T374113) and Cite backlinks (T378807).

Mentorship

Mentors play a key role in guiding new editors. If you’re interested in mentoring, or turning mentorship on at your wiki, check out the Mentorship FAQ

• Starting February 17, 100% of new accounts at English Wikipedia will be assigned a mentor (T384505).
• At Spanish Wikipedia, on 50% of newcomers get a mentor. Experienced contributors are encouraged to join mentorship so that Spanish Wikipedia can provide a mentor to all new users.

Looking Ahead

In the coming months, we will continue balancing maintenance work—such as deprecating EditGrowth Config (T367574) and migrating Statslib (T359352) — with user-facing improvements that support new editors and foster the next generation of contributors.

• New Tool for Women’s Day: Scheherazade identifies women without articles in your Wikipedia but present in many others, helping editors prioritize creating missing biographies.

Other Noteworthy Stuff

• Wikimedia Research Fund had launched. You're encourage to submit proposals around Wikidata. The deadline to submit your proposal is April 16, 2025.
• The 4th iteration of the Wikidata:Open Online Course will begin from March 17 until April 30. Whether you're a beginner taking your first steps, an individual in need of a refresher on Wikidata concepts, or a seasoned trainer looking to level up your skills - this course is right for you.

• 維基媒體基金會正在徵求您對下年度目標與關鍵結果（OKR）草案的反饋意見，這些OKR將影響基金會的下一個財政年度（從7月開始）的產品與技術優先事項。「目標」是廣泛的高層次領域，而「關鍵成果」則是追蹤目標成功與否的可衡量方式。請在討論頁分享您的意見，語言不限，最好在4月底之前提出。

近況更新 - 面向編輯者

• CampaignEvents擴充功能將於2025年4月部署至多個維基（詳情請見部署計畫），團隊已開始與確定部署的維基社群接觸。該擴充功能提供了在維基上籌辦、管理和推廣協作活動（如Event活動、編輯松、維基專題）的工具。該擴充功能有三個工具：活動報名、協作清單和邀請清單。該擴充功能目前已部署至13個維基百科（包括中文、英語、法語、西班牙語等），以及維基數據。若有任何問題或請求，請至擴充功能討論頁或Phabricator（加上#campaigns-product-team標籤）。

近況更新 - 面向技術貢獻者

• New requests for permissions/Bot:Request for admin flag for MsynBot - From 2021 through 2024, this bot has implemented the 2019 RfC “semi-protection to prevent vandalism on most used Items” by maintaining page protections based on the outcome, d:Wikidata:Protection policy#Highly used items. The admin flag got lost due to bot inactivity but the bot operation could be resumed immediately if the admin flag is given back.

聲音原理:發音自文明開創以來與體內神經連結,也和物質有迴力的作用,聲音原理不論聲音大小聲、音的波長、震波的力道及幅度、距離等都會因為精神與出氣發聲的力道or力度、全身神經的連結以及文字的發音，可能增加好感度及內心的不舒服. 有個情況則是，肢體語言和五官面部表情呈現出氣的力度，此時可以注意到是不是檢視一下子此人是不是生病了?

• 編輯團隊正在開發新的編輯檢查：華辭檢查（Peacock check）。這項檢查的目的是在使用者編輯維基頁面時找出非中立詞句，以便在他們發布編輯前通知並建議其修改。華辭檢查仍在早期階段，團隊正在尋求社群的意見：在此Phabricator工單中，團隊正在收集他們目前所研究的語言版本的維基內方針、用來標記非中立條目的模板，以及編輯摘要的用語（術語與關鍵字）。要參與其中，您可以編輯工單中的表格、在工單留言，或是直接傳訊息給Trizek (WMF)。

• We merged and prepared changes to rename wikibase:EntitySchema to wikibase:WikibaseEntitySchema in RDF (phab:T371196) – this has been announced as a breaking change and will be deployed to Wikidata on 24 April
• We made some more improvements to dark mode support (phab:T389633)
• We’re working on tests for the ScopedTypeaheadSearch feature (phab:T385790)
• Wikibase REST API: We're going to wrap up pagination on the simple Item and property search endpoint and are working to improve our test architecture for search (phab:T386691). We're going to pick up prefix search for Items and phrase matching next!

Wikimedia Apps newsletter – First quarter of 2025

Hello, and welcome to the first newsletter of 2025! In this edition, we’ll walk you through the exciting updates, experiments, and improvements made to the Wikipedia mobile apps during December, January, and February.

iOS

Personalized Wikipedia Year in Review

We released the improved version of the Year in Review to all users, now available in multiple languages and for both logged-in and logged-out users. While donation rates were lower than our goal, we saw great engagement with the feature & it brought in a higher share of first-time donors and a higher average donation compared to banner campaigns.

Notably:

• 97.4% of survey respondents rated the experience as neutral or better.
• We saw a 74% increase in new accounts, with 368 new editors actively contributing as a result.
• Most users asked for more personalized stats and a better summary of their reading journey.

Alt Text Experiment Wrap-Up

Our 60-day alternative text experiment has ended. While users showed interest in the task, quality was a challenge—especially for newcomers. The experiment helped us understand how we can guide editors better when writing alt text and which improvements to focus on next.

Some key takeaways:

• Completion rates were decent (28% for newer editors), but the quality of the alternative text needed improvement.
• Many users wanted clearer guidance and better context for writing alt text.
• Many users expressed interest in a dedicated feed for image-related tasks.

We’re not making the alternative text suggested edit permanent at this time. If we decided to focus on this task again, we would invest in improved guidance for writing alternative text, and make improvements to the user flow.

Navigation Refresh

We made significant progress in refreshing the app’s navigation. Highlights include:

• A more native iOS feel with system-standard navigation bars.
• New access points for the Profile menu across multiple screens.
• Ongoing A/B testing of a more prominent search bar in articles, available in Arabic, French, German, and Japanese.

We also began tracking where article views come from (e.g., from Places, History, or Explore), which will help us understand user behavior better.

Tabbed Browsing Begins

We kicked off discovery and design work for adding tabs to the iOS app—one of the most requested features! Based on user feedback and inspiration from other apps, we’ve created a prototype and started user testing. Stay tuned as this exciting feature continues to evolve!

Bug Fixes & Developer Contributions

Thanks to volunteer contributions and internal efforts, we fixed several bugs including:

• Search results overlapping with the status bar.
• Crashes while editing specific articles.
• Incorrect day shown in “In the News.”
• Improved handling of italics and language variants.

Android

WikiGames & WikiTrivia

We released the Wikipedia Game to production in German Wikipedia and began work on WikiTrivia using “On this day” content. User feedback from initial testing is helping shape both features.

Private Donor Recognition Experiment

We wrapped up our donor recognition experiment in France and the Netherlands. While overall donations were lower than expected, user feedback was clear:

• 81% of surveyed users want the dashboard to exist on multiple platforms.
• 39% of users who saw the donor icon feature chose to personalize their app icon.
• Many users prefer automatic updates to their donor stats without manual input.

Rabbit Holes

To improve reader retention, we tested two approaches: suggested articles in search and personalized reading lists. Results showed strong engagement:

• 93.3% of feedback was positive or neutral.
• Pageviews were significantly higher for users who engaged with the feature.
• Users preferred reading lists over suggested search results.

Jetpack Compose Migration

We've started migrating our Android layouts to Jetpack Compose to modernize the app and improve performance long-term.

Other Fixes & Enhancements

• Fixed bugs related to offline article loading, push notifications, and language variants.
• Enhanced language support in captions and local language display.

• Wikidata Query Service: The search platform team finished the remaining work for the graph split and it is going live this week.
• We took part in the Wikimedia Hackathon in Istanbul
• Wikipedia and co: We continued working on improving how Wikidata edits are shown on the watchlist on Wikipedia and co. We are focusing on showing labels instead of IDs for the entities (Items, Properties, ...) linked in the edit summaries (phab:T388685)
• UI: We continued doing small fixes for dark mode support in the UI (phab:T385039)
• Wikibase REST API: We are continuing the work on the search endpoint (phab:T383126)

近況更新 - 面向編輯者

• 已啟用CampaignEvents的維基，該擴充功能發布了兩項新的功能改進：
  • 管理員現在可以透過社群配置（說明文件）選擇哪些命名空間允許活動報名。預設配置允許在「Event」命名空間中進行活動報名，但現在可以新增其他命名空間（例如專案或「維基專題」命名空間）。有了這項變更，維基專題等社群現在可以更輕鬆地使用活動報名功能來舉辦協作活動。
