5,6-雙氫-5(α-胸腺嘧啶基)胸腺嘧啶是細菌內孢子里的DNA暴露於紫外線時產生的嘧啶二聚體[1]它會扭曲DNA的結構,因此細菌內孢子中都會有修復這種損害的孢子光產物裂解酶英語spore photoproduct lyase(SPL)。[2]

5,6-雙氫-5(α-胸腺嘧啶基)胸腺嘧啶在實驗室中可通過5-羥甲基尿嘧啶、6-氨基胸腺嘧啶三氟乙酸酐三氟乙酸溶液反應,再用氰基硼氫化鈉還原而成。[3]
