山姆大叔

山姆大叔（英語：Uncle Sam）是美国的绰号和拟人化形象，一般被描绘成為穿著马甲礼服，头戴星条旗纹样的高礼帽、身材高瘦、留着山羊鬍、帥氣、精神矍铄的老人形象。此漫画形象由画家詹姆斯·蒙哥马利·弗拉格為公共资讯委员会所画。

按照《美国军事历史》的说法[1]，“山姆大叔”一名源于1812年美英战争时期纽约州倫塞列郡特洛伊城的肉類商人塞缪尔·威尔逊（Samuel Wilson，1766～1854年），暱稱山姆大叔，在战争中向美军供应醃製的牛肉，牛肉桶上的牌子写着“EA-US”。EA是1812年的战争期间，向美军供应牛肉的承包商艾尔伯特·安德森（Elbert Anderson）的缩写，为公司名；而山姆大叔（Uncle Sam）的缩写是US。当桶被送到部队时，一些来自特洛伊城的士兵，開玩笑地說桶上寫的US字樣，一定就是指「山姆大叔」，這说法很快传开。由於合眾國（United States）的缩写恰好也是US，其后成為了美利堅合眾國的绰号。美国人將“山姆大叔”视为诚实可靠、吃苦耐劳及爱国主义精神，並認為這是自己公民的骄傲和共有的品性。

1961年9月15日，美國國會参议院和众议院通过“山姆大叔”共同决议[S. Con. Res. 14]，鉴于有些人认为“山姆大叔”符号已经陈旧不应保留，然而纽约州特洛伊的Samuel Wilson（1776～1854年）仍代表了这个「世界上最伟大国家」的力量与理想（法規原文如此），因而决定将美国传统符号“山姆大叔”正式固定下来，并将来自纽约州特洛伊的“山姆大叔”作为美国国家象征“山姆大叔”的原型。[2]
