本科傳統上歸類於鱸形目鯧亞目，但舊有的鱸形目是並系群，鯧亞目與鯖亞目被改組成獨立的鯖形目[2]。已知本科是圓鯧科及鯧科的姐妹群，演化關係如下[3]：
