彼得·索耶
彼得·海耶斯·索耶（英語：Peter Hayes Sawyer，1928年6月25日—2018年7月7日[1][2]），英國歷史學家。他對維京史與英格蘭中世紀史的研究在學界頗具影響力[3][4]。索耶在早期著作《維京時代》（The Age of the Vikings）中提出觀點，認為「維京人是商人而非劫掠者」，顛覆了之前學界認為維京人只專注於破壞與掠奪的傳統看法[3]。
索耶尤以其對盎格魯-撒克遜憲章的編目與注釋而聞名。根據其編纂的目錄，對盎格魯-撒克遜憲章的引用，都採用「索耶編號」（縮寫為「S」，例如「S 407」）的形式[5]。
生平
[編輯]索耶於1928年6月25日出生於英國牛津。父親是比爾·索耶，一位菸草商[3]。母親是格蕾絲·伍德布里奇。除了在二戰期間曾與親屬在米爾福德港居住外，他一直在牛津長大[3]。
1948年至1951年間，索耶在牛津大學耶穌學院攻讀現代史，獲榮譽文學學士學位[3][6]。1951年至1953年，他在曼徹斯特大學攻讀研究生[3]。離開曼徹斯特後，他於1953年至1956年在愛丁堡大學任助理，1957年至1964年在伯明罕大學擔任中世紀史講師[6]。1964年起，他在利茲大學任教，1970年成為中世紀史教授。在利茲大學任教期間，他與羅伯特·斯圖爾特·霍伊特合作，於1967年創辦《國際中世紀文獻書目庫》（International Medieval Bibliography）[7][8]。1982年，他從利茲大學提前退休，並於1998年被授予榮休教授稱號[9]。
索耶隨後繼續在哥德堡大學擔任講師，並曾多次以訪問學者身份在美國任教：1966年至1967年及1984年為明尼蘇達大學教員，1985年為加州大學伯克利分校教員[6][3]。
1996年至2006年間，他在挪威特隆赫姆工作，其妻比爾吉特·索耶是挪威科技大學中世紀史教授。自2006年起，他在烏普薩拉居住並從事學術研究[6]。
2018年7月，索耶在烏普薩拉去世，享壽90歲[1]。
