Ching-chih Lin
[编辑]Ching-chih Lin is a Taiwanese historian and scholar of Chinese popular religion. He is currently an assistant professor at the Graduate Institute of Religious Studies, National Chengchi University (NCCU), Taipei, Taiwan. His research focuses on Chinese folklore, popular religion and sectarianism, environmental history, digital humanities, tangible and intangible cultural heritage, material culture, and New Year woodblock prints. His work explores how religious beliefs and folk practices are transformed and localized through population migration, as well as the interaction between religion and ecological environments.
Education and Academic Career
[编辑]Lin received his Ph.D. in History from the University of California, Berkeley. He subsequently held a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institute of Modern History, Academia Sinica. He has also served as a visiting professor at the University of Göttingen in Germany in 2016, 2018, 2021, and 2025, where he offered intensive courses on Chinese Popular Religion.
Research Interests
[编辑]Lin's doctoral dissertation focuses on the religious transformation of boat-dwelling communities in Weishan Lake (微山湖), located at the border of Shandong and Jiangsu provinces in North China. His research examines how these communities adapted their religious beliefs, rituals, and theogony during their transition from land-based to aquatic lifestyles.
His subsequent work has broadened to include historical studies, ethnographic fieldwork, and digital humanities approaches. He has employed GIS spatial analysis and social network analysis to study the religious beliefs and folk customs of both the Weishan Lake region and Taiwanese and Southeast Asian Chinese communities.
Cultural Heritage and Public Engagement
[编辑]Lin has actively contributed to cultural heritage preservation. From December 2017 to December 2018, he led the “Investigation on the Potential Intangible Cultural Heritage of Traditional Joss Paper and Incense Making” project commissioned by the Cultural Heritage Bureau of Taiwan's Ministry of Culture.
Over the past five years, Lin has also conducted in-depth fieldwork on the tea-related religious practices and folk customs of migrants from Anxi County, Fujian Province, particularly those who settled in the Great Wenshan region of northern Taiwan, including Muzha, Jingmei, Shenkeng, Shiding, Pinglin, Xindian, and Wulai. His work has significantly contributed to the understanding of local cultural history and community formation.
Leadership in Digital Humanities
[编辑]From August 2019 to February 2023, Lin served as Secretary-General of the Taiwanese Association for Digital Humanities. He has been actively involved in promoting the application of digital tools and methods in the humanities, particularly in the study of religion and Sinology. His recent projects have included the use of 3D LiDAR scanning and modeling to digitally document historical buildings and temples, thereby combining academic research with social responsibility.
