2023年10月7日，哈马斯发动阿克萨洪水行动，约2500名哈马斯武装分子对以色列前哨基地和定居点发动协同攻击，其烧毁建筑物，屠杀数百名平民，并将数百人绑架到加沙。哈马斯当天发射了5000多枚火箭[1]。以色列随后向哈马斯宣战[2]。
尽管仍未确定总伤亡人数，但至少600名平民在最初的袭击中被屠杀，约150至250名平民被绑架到加沙地带[3][4][5]。其他平民一度被绑架，但在以色列反击下获救。截至攻击第一天结束时，以色列已有约1300人丧生，其中大部分是以色列平民，包括超过75名外国人[6]。这是以色列历史上最血腥的大屠杀[7]。
