The problem with sorting by the Latin alphabet is that Chinese from different parts of the world will use different methods of romanizing their Chinese names. For example, the surname "張" is usually romanized as "Zhang" in Mainland China, "Cheung" in Hong Kong or "Teo" in Malaysia/Singapore. If your method of sorting were to be used, the surname 張 will be sorted by at least three different letters (ie "Z", "C" and "T"), which will thus defeat the purpose of categorizing in the first place. In order to overcome this problem, the category should be sorted by Han characters. Although it would be ideal to sort by Hanyu Pinyin, this will lead to conflict amongst users of different methods of romanization. eg. Wade-Giles which is used widely in Taiwan.
