commonwealth (美国的州)
“commonwealth ”这一名词被美国五十个州中的四个做为正式名称采用。“commonwealth”是传统英语中为共同利益而建立的政治共同体[1]。这四个州分别是肯塔基州[2]、马萨诸塞州[3]、宾夕法尼亚州[4]与弗吉尼亚州[5]。在美利坚合众国组成之前，这些州份都是英国殖民地（虽然肯塔基当时并非独立实体，而是弗吉尼亚的一部分）因此，这些州份在法律与制度上都被英国普通法系影响很深[6][7]。
中文翻译
[编辑]多数书籍将commonwealth译为“州”，和state相同。[8]比较罕见的译法（用于和state区分）有“共和政体”[9]、“民主联邦”[10]等。
