当地时间6月14日凌晨2时，明尼苏达州钱普林警方接报赶赴州参议员约翰·霍夫曼位于当地的住所，发现霍夫曼与其妻子身中枪伤。其后，两名警员前往附近布鲁克林帕克，查看州众议员梅丽莎·霍特曼的住处[1]。警员于凌晨3时35分抵达[2]，注意到车道上停有一辆与警车外观极为相似的SUV。布鲁克林帕克警察局长马克·布鲁利表示，该车几乎与巡逻警车无异[3]。

警员到场时遭一名疑似身穿全套警察制服的男子开火。该人身上配备有防弹衣、警徽及标准警用装备，开火后退回屋内[2][4] 。
