背景

纽华克新体育场馆计划最早在2002年就由纽瓦克市议会首次拨款，[11] 在经历了关于用地征和市府对体育馆建设项目的财政参与等法律纠纷后，最终协议获得议会批准，于2004年10月正式生效。[12]

纽华克体育馆（Newark Arena）于2005年10月3日举行动工仪式。新泽西魔鬼队于2006年1月24日提交书面保证，以1亿美元支持场馆建设持续进行，避免因成本问题导致计划取消。[13]同年7月，新上任的纽华克市长柯瑞·布克再次考虑市府挹注资金建设新场馆的必要性，[14][15]双方在10月达成协议。[16]最终的建造成本估计约3.8亿美元。[4][17]

保德信金融集团2007年1月以1.053亿美元的价格购得20年的场馆冠名权。保德信中心因此被昵称为“The Rock”，[18]取自保德信金融的企业标志——直布罗陀巨岩。

保德信中心于2007年10月25日开幕，新泽西本土摇滚乐队邦乔飞一连举行了10场演出（Lost Highway Tour（英语：Lost Highway Tour））。10月27日，新泽西魔鬼与渥太华参议员进行了首场比赛。参议员队也是魔鬼队在美国大陆航空中心（英语：Continental Airlines Arena）最后一场比赛的对手，[19]最终参议员队以4-1获胜。

2010年初，NBA新泽西篮网宣布2010-11年赛季将在保德信中心进行比赛，以因应延迟的主场迁移计划。在2012-13年赛季迁至纽约巴克莱中心并更名布鲁克林篮网。[20]WNBA纽约自由人也曾在2011至2013年麦迪逊广场花园翻修期间进驻。[21]

2013年12月，场馆年度收入达全美排名第三、国际排名第九。[22]
