本书的中心论点是以符合国家意识形态的方式呈现历史内容，往往会忽略敏感或不利的部分。[5] [6]本书包含的章节实际上是案例研究，篇幅从几页到几十页不等，分别讨论了十五个国家和地区的教科书问题，其中涉及的地区包括南非、撒哈拉以南非洲、西印度群岛、印度、阿拉伯世界、土耳其、西班牙、波兰、德国、日本、美国和澳大利亚。 [6]例如：书中讨论了波兰教科书呈现当时共产党控制下的波兰的波兰-俄罗斯历史；种族隔离时代的南非教科书顽固保留旧式的种族主义非洲历史，淡化了非洲文化和历史；苏联教科书中，曾对被高度赞美但后遭贬低的领导人如托洛茨基、列宁和斯大林的进行内容审查和重写；以及中国教科书中的马克思主义历史观，将中国历史描绘成一系列农民起义。当然也有部分国家的教材在改革中呈现出一些积极的变化，例如，战后德国早期教科书中删减了纳粹德国的历史部分内容（实际上是“让一代人否认关于阿道夫·希特勒是谁的所有知识”）；[7]其他非洲国家的教科书中大多未提及阿拉伯奴隶贸易，印度教材在叙述印度教徒和穆斯林之间的冲突时呈现出国家立场，什叶派掌权后的伊朗教科书中对逊尼派时代几乎只字未提。据一些学者称，土耳其教材未提及1915年 亚美尼亚人的种族灭绝。费罗还指出，一些变化正在朝着正确的方向发展，某些国家的历史教育正在向更加“全球化”、“去欧洲化”，甚至“去西方中心化”的方向发展；[8]然而，他也提醒人们注意，美国教科书过分关注本国地方历史，未提及大部分世界历史。 [9] [6] [5] [10]

此外，书里还讨论了文化认同的变迁，比如美国教材过去强调“熔炉”（大家都融成一个民族），近年来则转向“沙拉碗”（不同文化共存但不必融合），这种对文化认同的处理也在慢慢变化。[11]

2003年出版的英文第二版中，费罗还补充了关于苏联解体后俄罗斯的教材变化、民主化后的波兰历史叙述，并对第二次世界大战的教学内容进行了整体分析[12]

德国历史学家赖纳·里门施奈德Rainer Riemenschneider于1982年在法国期刊Histoire de l'éducation（法语：Histoire de l'éducation (revue)）上评论了这本书 .[13]

1986年，历史学者Richard M. Linkh 在历史讲师（英语：The History Teacher）杂志中指出，作者的野心过大，覆盖国家过多，个别章节讲得比较浅显，尤其是在谈到美国教材时，他引用的是小说和电影而非教材。

同年，John W. Cell（英语：John W. Cell）在《跨学科历史杂志》（英语：Journal of Interdisciplinary History）上称这本书“有趣、好读、重要”，虽然内容更多是讲“滥用”，但对教师具有启发意义，呼吁他们帮助学生认识到历史其实是一场场不同声音之间的较量。
