Background
The Humen Smoke Suppression was an anti-smoking operation during the Daoguang period of the Qing Dynasty in China, which took place in June 1839 under the auspices of Lin Zexu, the then Governor of Guangdong and Guangxi. As British traders imported opium into China in large quantities, the Qing government was forced to take strong measures to deal with the economic and social crisis caused by opium.
After
Lin Zexu set up a special tobacco market at Humen to centralize the destruction of captured opium. He ordered workers to dissolve the opium in lime water and pour it into the sea to show his determination. The operation lasted for 23 days and over 20,000 boxes of opium were destroyed.
Impact
The tough attitude of Humen to eliminate opium triggered the resentment of Britain and became the trigger of the Opium War in 1839.This event is not only a milestone in China's anti-drug history, but also marks the beginning of China's modern history.
