According to en:WP:IMAGERES, the Wikipedia convention of keeping non-free image files at containing no more than 0.1 megapixels is not a hardline policy. Its purpose, in general, is as a baseline to ensure that the amount of non-free content is no more than needed, and, editors are allowed to exceed that baseline if there is reasonable cause to think that a larger version of the non-free image improves the article. It is noted also that, "non-free images where one dimension exceeds 1,000 pixels, or where the pixel count approaches 1 megapixel, will very likely require a close review to verify that the image needs that level of resolution." To start with, the 460 x 651 version of the second KV that I uploaded here consists of only around 0.29 megapixels, so it is far shy of that bright-line rule.

Now, as for my reasons for uploading the image at this size. To do some basic analysis, Bang Dream is a character-driven franchise, and the purpose of the promotional art for this series particularly is to impress upon the uninitiated viewer the nature of the characters and their narrative journey, both as individuals and as a group. MyGO!!!!! is shown standing in the middle of a crosswalk, presumed to be the en:Shibuya Crossing, which is often used in Japanese popular media as a set piece or establishing location to emphasize characters starting or ending or contemplating a journey of some sort, be it a literal one or an emotional one. The MyGO cast stand in the crossing, all facing away from each other and appearing without purpose, emphasizing their nature as listless and uncertain "lost girls" as the Japanese language wordplay in their name characterizes them. Meanwhile, Tomori faces the viewer and cries out, and the remaining four girls are all looking back at her, emphasizing how Tomori is the lynchpin of the group that brings them all together. Their individual facial expressions and body language quickly convey each of their individual relationships to and feelings towards Tomori. They all look away from one another, but are brought to each other by her.

Anyway, this is obviously my individual analysis, but I think it's fair that many viewers would likely intuitively come to a similar conclusion based on this KV, even never having seen the show. Because the Wikipedia article should be written with the assumption that its readers are completely unaware of the series and the significance of the KV's imagery, the KV itself should be of suitable quality so as to convey to the readers what the series is about (I obviously can't put all that text I just typed in the Wikipedia page itself, because that'd be some pretty heavy en:WP:OR- we have to let readers come to their own conclusion). The anime is, to a significant extent, about the characters and their relationships, and so it's necessary to adequately convey that.

With that you're probably wondering, "all righty, Silvia, so the characters are important. okay. why don't we just crop the KV to only show the characters?" And sure, we could, but that'd ignore the other primary function of the KV's use in the article, which is to illustrate its function as an official representation of the series itself and as a piece of promotional material, giving some insight to the uninitiated reader into how the anime was marketed to its intended audience. And all of my crowing about how important the characters are is just an extension of wanting to preserve this information: the characters are part of the marketing, part of the KV's intended appeal ("whoa, those girls look cool!"), and a Wikipedia reader should be able to observe this fact. My point being, changing the composition of the KV from how it was initially displayed would alter the impression it offers to readers. The characters are as important as the location they're in, and the emotionally charged imagery it's associated with, which additionally serves to highlight to those familiar with past Bang Dream installments that MyGO is taking a different tone from what we knew, and this all should be evident.

When resizing the KV, I did test a version at the lower dimension consisting of 0.1 MP, using the calculator tool. This is the result. The composition is preserved, to be sure, but the characters are now much more difficult to discern and read, especially with the scene being as dimly lit as it is, unless you're already familiar with who they are. I did test the other KV, as well. I don't think I prefer this one since it's not the one most commonly used, and I think we should prefer the KV that's most commonly recognizable- but if it showed the characters better at smaller dimensions, I'd say it would've been acceptable. However, I don't think it does.

While the characters being central to the KV isn't unusual in this genre, the issue is compounded by that the characters aren't exactly center in the frame as is common in the KV/promo art for other similar series. A few examples:

In all these cases, the Wikipedia-recommended 0.1 MP size is just fine, given that the characters' faces are far more central to the composition, and so a larger size to preserve the relevant visual information about the series' cast and narrative tone is not necessary. In this unusual case of a relatively unorthodox artistic composition, however, the larger size proves necessary.

Hopefully that all is a sufficient explanation for the chosen size. If anyone wants to dispute the issue, I'm open to a discussion and negotiation for a compromise if need be. silviaASH (inquire within) 21:21, 28 February 2025 (UTC)
